Finding the Work

A keyword tool tells you what’s popular. It has no idea where you stand.

AlmaSEO reads your own Search Console and scores every keyword by where you actually rank — because four positions from page one beats ten thousand searches you’ll never win. These are the SEO quick wins the data already knows about: striking-distance keywords, cannibalized queries, content decay and the gaps between them. It costs nothing to run, on every plan.

The hardest part of SEO isn’t doing the work. It’s knowing which work is worth doing.

Open any keyword tool and it hands you a spreadsheet of search volumes. Ten thousand a month, difficulty 78, and no indication whatsoever of whether you have any business chasing it. So you pick something plausible, write four thousand words, and find out nine months later that you were never going to outrank the incumbent.

Meanwhile the actual opportunity was already sitting in your Search Console: a page at position six with a headline nobody clicks, two of your own articles fighting each other for the same query, and a post that quietly lost forty percent of its traffic in March while you weren’t looking.

AlmaSEO starts from that data instead. Every list on this page is built from queries you already rank for — ranked by how much traffic is genuinely recoverable, not by how big the number looks.

For the SEO with no budget for another data subscription — and the one auditing a new client.

For the solo SEO or in-house marketer

You already own the best data about your own site.

Search Console is free, it’s yours, and it knows exactly which of your pages are one good title tag away from real traffic. Almost nothing does anything useful with it beyond drawing a line chart.

  • Striking-distance queries scored by recoverable clicks, not volume
  • The pages losing traffic — and which of four reasons caused it
  • Free on every plan, including the cheapest one

For the consultant taking on a new account

You have a week to find something worth billing for.

The first month of a new engagement is a scramble to find wins that justify the retainer. Starting from a blank keyword tool is the slowest possible way to do that.

  • Connect Search Console and the opportunity lists populate immediately
  • Cannibalized queries and content gaps found without a crawl
  • Competitor keyword and link gaps when you want them, priced per run

Seven lists of SEO quick wins, and none of them cost anything to run.

Connect Search Console and these populate. No credits, no tier, no add-on — they read data Google already gives you and do the arithmetic nobody wants to do by hand. Five of them sit side by side in one panel, each tab carrying a live count of what it found.

Quick Wins

The queries sitting just off page one, ranked by what you’d actually gain.

Position four to fifteen, which is where the money is

Queries ranked 4–15 with real impression volume behind them. Below fifteen you’re rewriting the page; above three you’ve already won. The band in between is where a title tag and a paragraph move the needle in a fortnight.

Scored by clicks you’re leaving on the table

AlmaSEO compares your actual click-through rate against what a normal result earns at position three, multiplies by your impressions, and sorts by the difference. The number at the top of the list is an estimate of the extra clicks, not a vanity score out of a hundred.

Which tells you when it isn’t a ranking problem at all

Sitting at #6 with a 1% click rate isn’t a rankings problem, it’s a headline problem — and the score separates the two. You stop building links at a page that needed a better title.

Straight into the workspace

Every row has a Fix in SSH button that lands the keyword in SSH Workspace with its position, its impressions and a written brief to rewrite the title tag. That handoff needs Pro, since that’s where SSH Workspace lives — the list itself is on every plan.

The Quick Wins screen: 36 keyword opportunities ranked by recoverable clicks, above a Traffic Drop Diagnosis panel tagging each losing page with its cause
36 opportunities found, 566 potential extra clicks across a 28-day window — keywords already on page one or two whose click-through rate is below average. ‘How to fix a leaking faucet’ sits at position 3.4 on 12,000 impressions with a 0.8% click rate: an opportunity score of 480 and an estimated 185 extra clicks available. Every row has a button that sends the keyword to SSH Workspace with its position, impressions and a brief. Below it, Traffic Drop Diagnosis reads 16 pages affected, 375 clicks lost — and names the cause for each: a frozen-pipes post down 83 clicks marked Demand Decline, a drain-cleaning page down 43 marked Ranking Loss, a water-heater page down 56 whose position barely moved marked CTR Collapse, and a garbage-disposal post that fell off the results entirely marked Disappeared.

CTR Gaps

Pages already on page one that don’t earn what page one should.

Ranking well and still under-performing

Every page in the top ten with real impressions behind it, compared against the click-through rate a result in that position normally earns. Where yours falls short, that shortfall is the finding.

Measured in clicks, not percentages

The gap is multiplied by your actual impressions, so the list is ordered by the clicks you’d recover — not by whichever page has the most embarrassing percentage.

The counterpart to Quick Wins, not a copy of it

Quick Wins works on queries sitting off page one. This works on pages already on it. One tells you what to push up; this tells you what’s already there and quietly wasting the position.

Content Decay

The slow fade, which no single comparison will show you.

Three windows, not two

AlmaSEO compares three consecutive thirty-day periods and keeps only the pages that fell in both steps — older beat middle, middle beat recent. A page that dipped and recovered doesn’t qualify; a page quietly bleeding for three months does.

Which is a different problem from a drop

Traffic Drops catches the fall you’d notice. This catches the decline you wouldn’t — the post that was worth four hundred clicks a month last quarter and is worth two hundred and forty now, having never once dropped enough in a month to trigger anything.

Ranked by clicks lost across the whole slide

Total decline from the oldest window to the newest, with the percentage alongside, so you refresh the page that cost you the most traffic rather than the one with the steepest-looking line.

Traffic Drops

The pages that lost clicks, and which of four things caused it.

Last 28 days against the 28 before them

Page-level, with a floor on prior clicks so a page that went from two clicks to one doesn’t crowd out the one that went from nine hundred to four hundred.

Every drop gets a cause, not just a red arrow

Lost ranking, click-through collapse, falling demand, or disappeared entirely — and mixed when it’s more than one. A page whose position held but whose click rate halved is a completely different job from one that fell six places.

Demand decline, named as such

Sometimes the page is fine and the search just stopped happening. AlmaSEO says so rather than letting you spend a week optimising against a seasonal curve.

Cannibalization

A keyword cannibalization checker for the queries where your own pages compete with each other.

Two or more of your URLs on the same query

AlmaSEO buckets 28 days of query-and-page data, keeps the queries where multiple pages of yours appear with real impressions behind them, and ranks them by how much traffic is caught in the split.

With every competing page listed out

Clicks, impressions, click rate and position for each URL fighting for that query — so you can see which one Google actually prefers before you decide which to consolidate and which to redirect.

Keyword Research

Five sources merged into one scored list — without calling a paid API.

It starts from what you already rank for

Your Search Console queries, the content gaps found on your own site, any volume and difficulty figures previously looked up, cached SERP data, and free Google Suggest expansion off your seed terms. Merged, deduplicated and scored.

Scored the way an SEO would score it

Striking distance is worth more than raw volume. Position 4–10 scores highest, 11–20 next, a confirmed content gap adds to it, and a page already on page one with a click rate under two percent is flagged as its own kind of opportunity.

Sorted by intent

Transactional, commercial, navigational or informational, so a page of how-to queries doesn’t get scored against a page of buying queries.

Exports to CSV, and feeds the WordPress plugin

The list leaves the tool. It also serves the AlmaSEO WordPress plugin directly, so the keywords you’re targeting reach the site you’re writing on.

Content Gaps

Content gap analysis from your own data — queries earning impressions with no page really answering them.

Found in your own impression data

Queries Google is already showing you for, where nothing on the site is a dedicated or well-performing answer. It’s the cheapest content brief there is, because the demand is already proven.

Straight into a draft

A gap row hands off into the article creation form pre-populated — the one place in AlmaSEO where finding the work and doing it are a single click apart.

And the lookups that reach outside your own data.

Search Console can’t tell you what your competitor ranks for, what a live SERP looks like today, or whether ChatGPT mentions you. Those answers have to be bought from a data vendor, so AlmaSEO charges them through Data Credits — priced per run, shown before you spend, never a tier upgrade. Every one of these is available on every plan, including Solo.

Live SERP Check

What the results page actually looks like right now.

SERP features, per keyword

Whether an AI Overview is present, whether a featured snippet is taking the click, what the People Also Ask box contains, and what the organic results actually are. Findings hand off to SSH Workspace on Pro and up.

Search volume, CPC and competition

The Google Ads figures for a keyword, when you want a volume number to put next to an impression count. This is the only path to real search volume in AlmaSEO — Search Console gives impressions, not volume, and the free lists are honest about the difference.

Plan Every plan. 25 Data Credits per keyword, either scan.

AI Overview Tracker

Whether Google’s AI answer cites you — on the keywords you already rank for.

It picks the keywords itself

Your top Search Console queries, checked against live SERPs, recording whether an AI Overview appeared at all and whether your domain is cited inside it.

And it keeps the history

Each run is saved, so the answer to “are we losing AI citations” is a trend rather than a screenshot. This is one of the few things here that does persist over time.

Competitor gaps

The keywords and links they have and you don’t.

The queries a competitor ranks for and you don’t — the single most reliable source of a content plan that isn’t guesswork. 150 Data Credits per run.

Organic competitor discovery

Who you’re actually competing with in the results, which is regularly not who the client thinks. 100 Data Credits.

Link gap

Domains linking to a competitor but not to you, alongside your own backlink authority, referring domains, anchors and new-or-lost links. 100 Data Credits for the gap, 150 for a full link profile.

What this is — and four things it deliberately isn’t.

This category is full of tools that describe a dashboard as an engine. Here is exactly where the automation ends.

AlmaSEO is not a rank tracker.

There is no daily position check and no rank history chart, because AlmaSEO doesn’t buy a position scrape for every keyword every morning. What you see is Google’s own average position over a rolling 28 days — which is the right number for deciding what to work on, and the wrong number for watching a keyword move day to day. If daily rank movement is what you need, keep the tracker you have. The one exception is per-location local rank checks, which are a separate, deliberately metered thing.

There is no single merged “do this next” list.

The five Search Console diagnostics — Quick Wins, CTR Gaps, Traffic Drops, Content Decay and Cannibalization — do sit together in one panel, one click apart, each tab showing how many findings it has. That is genuinely one place to look. What they are not is fused: each keeps its own scoring, and nothing merges them into a single ranked queue that says do this, then this. Keyword Research and Content Gaps sit elsewhere again. So you get five focused answers side by side rather than one master priority list, and AlmaSEO would rather say that than imply an ordering it doesn’t compute.

Nothing here scores difficulty.

Every score is opportunity-only — how much traffic is recoverable, not how hard it will be to recover. Difficulty figures are available once you enrich a keyword, but they sit next to the score rather than inside it. There is no impact-versus-effort matrix, and building one on a difficulty number bought from a vendor would be false precision anyway.

The lists don’t remember what you fixed.

Every list is computed fresh from Search Console each time you open it. Nothing records that a quick win was surfaced, actioned or resolved, so AlmaSEO can’t show you “eight of twelve fixed this month.” A fixed page simply stops appearing, which is honest but isn’t a progress report.

Which plan you need.

This is the shortest section on the site, because the answer is any of them.

Every plan, including Solo

All seven free lists — Quick Wins, CTR Gaps, Traffic Drops, Content Decay, Cannibalization, Keyword Research and Content Gaps — plus every metered lookup: live SERP checks, search volume, AI Overview tracking, keyword and link gaps, competitor discovery and bulk enrichment. Not one thing in this area is locked behind a higher tier. The metered lookups are paid for in Data Credits, which every plan carries and every plan can top up.

Pro, for one thing only

The Fix in SSH button on a Quick Wins row hands the keyword, its position and a written brief straight into SSH Workspace, which is a Pro feature. The list is free everywhere; it’s the place the finding lands that needs the upgrade.

One thing worth being clear about: Search Console gives you impressions, not search volume. The free lists are built on impressions, which is genuinely the better signal for your own site — it’s demand Google has already shown you. Volume is a number about the whole market, it has to be bought, and AlmaSEO would rather charge you honestly for it than pretend the free list contains it.

Find out what you’re four positions away from.

Open the quick wins in the demo, then connect your own Search Console and watch the same list build from your data. It costs nothing to run and it takes about a minute.
